Taking Flight rings particularly true for Megan, as this album is all about pushing past her fears and doubts and taking a leap of faith. A lifelong singer and entertainer, it wasn’t until Megan started working with Shevy Smith in 2010 that she seriously considered the possibility of writing her own album. Through “Girls with Guitars,” Megan learned the skills and confidence as a writer to start venturing into unknown territory and setting her own thoughts and feelings to music.
Recorded and produced with Shevy at her Topanga Canyon studio and at Stagg Street Studio in Van Nuys, CA, Taking Flight offers Megan’s reflections on life and love. “It’s a cathartic process, working through relationship turmoil and the challenges life throws at you by putting them to music” she says. “But it’s also slightly terrifying, bearing your soul and putting a piece of yourself out there for everyone to judge, not really knowing if it’s good enough. But then, that’s the life of an artist, and I think it’s the process of creation that matters most. I was so blessed to get to work with some incredibly talented artists on this album, and hearing the songs come to life was such a surreal experience.”
A California transplant, Megan grew up a Midwestern and Southern girl at heart, with roots in Kansas, Texas, and Wisconsin. With a can-do attitude and work ethic, she paid her way through college and graduate school with scholarships earned in the Miss America program. As Miss Kansas 2004, Megan was a Top Ten Finalist at the 2005 Miss America pageant, as well as a Quality of Life Finalist. She earned dual Bachelor’s degrees in Entrepreneurship and Music Business from Wichita State University, graduating magna cum laude. She then went on to earn her MBA from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. Today, Megan works as the Director of Marketing at DeskSite, a new online video entertainment network, whose clients include the National Football League.
Megan was exposed to volunteerism at an early age, and has tirelessly supported the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence over the years, serving as their spokesperson from 2004 – 2005, and then later on their Board of Directors from 2009 – 2011, while helping to raise more than $500,000 for violence prevention services. For her efforts, she has received the Presidential Service Award, as well as national recognition by the Miss America Organization.
While new to writing, Megan is no stranger to the stage. She has performed live for thousands of people at venues around the country, and entertained millions more in television appearances. Previously, Megan was a lead singer in Annie Up, a female fronted band that performed country, dance, and classic rock music. Throughout 2009-2010, she toured across the Midwest, entertaining at corporate events, fairs, festivals, private parties, and casinos. Currently, Megan is a lead singer in Rembrandt, a 12-piece band providing live entertainment and dance music at high-end weddings, corporate events, and other private affairs throughout Southern California.
Megan plans to keep writing, and hopes to release a full-length album in the next two years. She'll be returning to her home state of Kansas for a brief tour in summer 2014. In the meantime, you can find her performing throughout the Los Angeles area. “Being able to play music for a living has been my lifelong dream. This journey has been an exciting learning experience, and I’m eager to grow as writer and performer. I look forward to sharing my hopes, experiences, heart, and soul with the world.”
